To My Mum, On Monther’s Day

There's an extra special bond between a mother and daughter. Or am I just lucky to have an extra special mother?

There's a comfort in knowing you can always count on her. Whether it's for a simple early morning chat on the way to work, or when you're so heartbroken and you're crying so hard you can’t breathe. You know she will show up for you no matter what, and you always have somewhere to go — when you literally have nowhere else to go.

As a woman now, I look back and realise my mum did the very best she could, and she did such a beautiful job.

A single mum with two young daughters, working hard and still trying to find her own way in life. Still searching for love — love for herself, too.

She boldly took a chance and opened her very own business. She worked, cooked, cleaned, and still found time to help with our silly school projects. She was cool, fun, funny, so pretty and popular. She always made sure we had the latest fashionable clothes, and she always promised we wouldn't get much for Christmas, then spoilt us every single time.

We never had a lot of money, but she made sure we never went without. She'd really put in the extra effort, like spreading kangaroo poo through the house so we'd know the Easter bunny had been. She really made the best birthday cakes ever. She let us be wild kids, but she had boundaries too.

Like all things in life, there are ups and downs. You grow up and clash, probably because you're so alike. You have disagreements, say things you can't take back. You're sorry. But I know now that nothing can fully break the special bond between a mother and daughter.

I look at my mum now and I am so appreciative. I see a beautiful, nurturing woman. Kind, generous, giving. A mother who loves all her children unconditionally. She can be strong, feisty and independent, but she can also be fragile and vulnerable. She still tries to please everyone else when she really just needs to take care of herself.

Mum, I want to tell you how special and loved you are. How much I appreciate all the sacrifices you made for all those years. You are my best friend, and I can't wait to cherish every future moment with you.

Mum, it's your turn now. Time for you to rest. Time to take care of yourself and learn to love yourself the way you've always loved us.
